Heng Eow Lin

Heng Eow Lin interest in art was kindled from a young age. “When I was in Standard Four, my parents gave me a box of oil paint when they returned from a holiday in Singapore,” he recalls. “I was already keen on art then.”

After his secondary education, Eow Lin enrolled at the Singapore Nanyang Academy of Fine Art where he trained under Georgette Chen and Lim Yew Kuan.

Since he graduated in 1970, he had never felt the need to do anything other than what he had been trained for.

“I have never ‘worked’ before,” he says with a smile, referring to the nine-to-five office grind.

He works in portraits, does sculptures for himself and for commissions and paints whatever catches his fancy without worrying about catering to “popular taste”. —— Ooi Kok Chuen talks about Heng Eow Lin
